International Consolidated Contractors Offshore SAL (ICCO) has completed the 72 MWp Kapoeta–Nimule Power Project and associated grid infrastructure for Upper Nile Cement in the Republic of South Sudan. The project was completed on 29 July 2025 under an 18-month engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract valued at USD 98,783,098.

The scope covered a grid-connected, utility-scale solar photovoltaic plant and the power-evacuation and grid-interconnection infrastructure needed to deliver its output reliably. ICCO built a 220/132 kV substation rated 2 × 100 MVA and a 132/33 kV substation rated 2 × 50 MVA. About 18 km of double-circuit 132 kV overhead transmission line, including OPGW and telecommunications, together with about 47 km of 33 kV medium-voltage network, connect the plant and its host facilities to the grid.

SCADA, protection, control and metering systems tie the installation together. They allow the plant to be monitored, protected and operated as a single integrated facility.

One contract, one responsible party

Under the EPC model, ICCO held single-point responsibility for the full project cycle — design, engineering, procurement, supply, construction, installation, testing and commissioning. The work closed with energization, synchronization to the grid, performance verification and final handover to Upper Nile Cement.

Why it matters

South Sudan has a strong solar resource and a pressing need for dependable power. Pairing utility-scale generation with dedicated transmission and substations gives an industrial client a firmer supply and supports wider grid access along the Kapoeta–Nimule corridor.

Delivered by ICCO

All design, engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning for this project was executed by ICCO — the EPC contractor awarded the contract and solely responsible for delivery through to energization and handover.
